Rooftops and renegades

Being back in Melbourne recently made me see that Melbourne really is the New York of Australia. The grid system, the office blocks, being able to see your own breath and of course the fashion.

I moved to Melbourne in 2005. I was literally living the life of my dreams. I was the main character of my own rom-com. I was also blissfully unaware at the time.

I’d pick up my signature hot chocolate from my over-romanticised Starbucks (this was before I drank Coffee, yes I was youth!) and schlep up to 1 Spring Street, home of the government department I worked for. A stones throw from the stunning treasury gardens with pretty fountains and cute ducks for that sitting-solo-on-a-park bench moment.

Let’s be honest. It was more of a glide. As I clutched that little white cup I had music playing loudly in my ears as I stomped up the Paris end of Collins street. I could not afford any of the labels but that didn’t matter to me. I was my own Andrea Sachs in Devil Wears Prada. It probably was KT Tumstall pounding in my ears.

It was the time of my chartreuse trench coat. You could see me coming for miles in the sea of black as the crowd diverted off into various branches filtering away from Flinders street station.

Memories.

But what Melbourne also does well is a rooftop bar.

Picked out by our resident social queen, we were booked into H.E.R on the corner of a vertical lane way (tres Melbourne) and Lonsdale street.

This is an art/music/drinks destination and even the lift felt like a party.

The decor was cool. I’m a big fan of exposed brick and a statement tile. This did not disappoint. They’ve really created a space here.

If you’ve been feeling claustrophobic recently and you didn’t have it in the budget to pop off to Europe this winter let’s book in a trip to Melbourne as if like me and you love that feeling of being somewhere else this place definitely has it in H.E.R ♥️
